I used to travel considerable distances to help people, but now I only work in Mildenhall and the surrounding areas (for the reasons explained further below).
Barton Mills, Beck Row, Eriswell, Freckenham, Herringswell, Holywell Row, Icklingham, Lakenheath, Mildenhall, Red Lodge, Tuddenham, Undley, West Row, and Worlington.
Because of the huge recent increases in the cost of living, with even more to come, I’ve been forced to make changes to my way of life. For many years I’ve run a car, which has enabled me to work not only in Mildenhall and the surrounding villages, but also in Bury St. Edmunds, Newmarket, and further afield. However, for quite a while I’ve not been asked to travel anywhere very far away, and it costs me roughly £500 a year to keep my car taxed, insured, and tested, even if I end up going nowhere.
When the latest demand for vehicle tax arrived, wanting £220 for the year starting on 1st September 2022, even though I only have a two-litre diesel estate car and hardly ever use it, I decided that it was no longer sensible to run a car at all. Instead of paying the tax I notified the DVLA that my car was off the road, and the next logical step will probably be to get rid of it once and for all. Living in the country, there isn’t a lot of alternative transport, but I’ll just have to get used to it.
As I’m no longer running a car, I’m now only able to work in Mildenhall and the surrounding villages. Most of my work is in the local area anyway, but as computer troubleshooting falls off drastically during the warmer part of the year, I spent virtually all of summer 2022 helping a local business with their computer-related and administrative work. It certainly beat sitting at home wondering if my phone had broken.
Initially I enjoyed working for a local business most of the time, and I made a good job of everything I did there, even if I say so myself. However, during July 2023 there was nothing much to do, according to them, so I was asked not to come in for three-and-a-half weeks. In fact there was plenty of work to do there, but it was work that they didn’t want to do. After going back to the same office for the rest of the year, now, in early 2024, the same thing has happened again and I have been asked to come in only occasionally. Therefore I’m currently looking for a more regular source of work. If you need somebody reliable, keen, and competent to help with any computer-related or administrative work, please feel free to get in touch.
